 The plaque of "VUGHT GEMEENTE HUIS" (left) was given to my father, Sgt. George Sands MM. by a lady my father thought was the wife of the local Burgemeester. He always said that the lady was Scottish or had family in Scotland. At the time he and his platoon freed the lady, my fathers Commanding officer got word back to Scotland that she was safe. In 2005 we tried to re-trace the 5th Camerons fighting area, around Vught. We know that the Camerons entered Vught towards the Concentration camp from the Beukenhorst estate area. We were invited and made most welcome by the family Van Rijckevorsel, to visit Beukenhorst in an attempt to find the cellar from where the lady was liberated. My father was unable to remember any of the buildings, if indeed the building still exists. If anyone thinks they have any information please contact me. The Plaque is now "Home" again in Vught, presented to Peter & Jeanne van der Krabben after my fathers funeral. I will always be indebted to them. |
| De zoektocht van een Schotse bevrijder…. George Sands, in 1944 een 27-jarige Sergeant in de Schotse Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, is op zoek naar de bewoners van een huis dat hij op 27 oktober 1944 hielp bevrijden In zijn memoires omschrijft George zijn belevenissen van die dagen als volgt: “Op 27 oktober 1944 reden we vanuit St. Michielsgestel op Sherman tanks in de richting van Vught. Ondanks vertraging doordat tanks en carriers in de modder vast kwamen te zitten en doordat we onder vuur lagen van anti-tank kanonnen en machinegeweren, slaagde de operatie en wisten we tegen middernacht de hoofdweg naar Tilburg te bereiken. We bevrijdden onder meer de woning van de burgemeester en namen de in de kelder verblijvende Duitsers gevangen. De vrouw van de burgemeester was zo blij dat ze me omhelsde. Het bleek dat ze familie in Schotland had ! Via mijn commandant hebben we haar familie in Schotland kunnen informeren dat ze bevrijd was en in goede gezondheid verkeerde. De bewoners van het huis waren zeer opgetogen en gaven me als dank een houten plaquette met daarop een afbeelding van het Vughtse gemeentehuis en de tekst “VUGHT GEMEENTEHUIS’.” George Sands, inmiddels 88 jaar, koestert dit aandenken nog steeds en is al enkele jaren op zoek naar het huis en de bewoners die hij toen bevrijdde. Inmiddels is wel vast komen te staan dat het niet het huis van Burgemeester Loeff in Vught kan zijn geweest. Dat huis lag aan het Maurickplein. Het bataljon waarin George Sands vocht bevrijdde onder meer Esch en het zuidelijke deel van Vught. Op 28 oktober bereikten ze Kamp Vught. Het is dus heel goed mogelijk dat hij dit aandenken in een van de omliggende dorpen heeft gekregen. Begin mei hoopt George Sands Vught opnieuw te bezoeken. Hij zou het geweldig vinden om te weten van wie en waar hij het aandenken destijds heeft gekregen. |  | The search of a Scottish liberator........

Sands, in 1944 a 27 year old Sergeant in the Scottish Queens Own
Cameron Highlanders, is looking for the inhabitants of a house he
helped liberate on October 27 1944. In his memoires George describes his experiences in those days as follows: On October 27 1944 we drove on Sherman tanks from Sint-Michielsgestel in the direction of Vught. Despite delays due to the fact that tanks and carriers got stuck in the mud and that we were under attack from anti tank and machineguns, the operation succeeded and we managed to reach the main road to Tilburg by midnight. Amongst others we liberated the Mayor’s house and freed the Mayor’s wife from her German captors that were in the cellar. The Mayor’s wife was so happy that she hugged and kissed me. It appeared that she had relatives in Scotland! Through my Commanding Officer we managed to inform her relatives in Scotland that she was liberated and in good health. The residents of the house were so happy that they presented me with a wooden plaque which showed the townhall of Vught and the text “Vught Gemeentehuis”. George Sands, who is in his 89th year, still treasures this memento and has been looking for the house and its inhabitants that he liberated, for a couple of years. In the meantime it has become clear that the house was not the house of Mayor Loeff. That house was situated at the Maurickplein. George Sands battalion fought and liberated amongst others the village of Esch and the southern part of Vught. On October 28 they reached the Concentration Camp of Vught. It is very well possible that he received this present in one of the surrounding villages of Vught. Early May George Sands hopes to visit Vught again. He would be very happy to know from who and where he received the wooden plaque. |
| Bezoek veteraan George Sands M.M. Veteraan George Sands van de 2nd & 5th Battalions van de Queens Own Cameron Highlanders heeft in de eerste week van mei Vught bezocht. Hij heeft samen met zijn vriend en oud-veteraan Richard Massey veel plaatsen bezocht waar zij in oktober 1944 ook zijn geweest. Zij bewaren goede herinneringen aan Vught, zowel uit de tijd van de bevrijding als aan hun recente bezoeken. De speurtocht naar het huis waar George de houten plaquette kreeg heeft helaas nog niet tot resultaat geleid. Vermoedelijk is hij wel in de buurt van Huize Bergen en Beukenhorst geweest. Wie de schenkster van de houten plaquette was zal waarschijnlijk wel een raadsel blijven. In mei 2005 waren George Sands en Richard Massey weer bij Beekvliet. De aula is inmiddels afgebroken. |  | Visit of veteran
George Sands M.M. During the first week of May Veteran George Sands of the 2nd & 5th Battalions of the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders has visited Vught again. Together with his friend and veteran Richard Massey he visited many places where they had been in October 1944. They have good memories of Vught from the time of the liberation and of their recent visits. The search for the house where George received the wooden plaque has not yet lead to a result. It is very likely that he has been in the area of Huize Bergen and Beukenhorst. Who the lady was that presented him with the plaque will probably remain a mystery. In May 2005 George Sands and Richard Massey were at Beekvliet in Sint-Michielsgestel again. The great hall where he received his Military Medal from Montgomery has been pulled down, but the main building still exists. |
